New Pope, New Experience Abroad

Alessandro Bianchi/Reuters

As many of you may or may not know, we have a new pope! Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who renamed himself Francis, is the 266th Pontiff and as the New York Times stated in their headline from today’s newspaper, “is first non-european to lead church in 1,200 years.” I am not very religious but recognize how fascinating this is and am curious to see how it will effect my trip to Sicily.

Tomorrow I will be going abroad for the first time to the beautiful and historical land of Sicily, Italy with my journalism class. I can imagine the hubbub that will be encountered when listening to the gossip while perusing the open air markets. The new pope, as this article states, is “a theological conservative of Italian ancestry who vigorously backs Vatican positions on abortion, gay marriage, the ordination of women and other leading issues of the day – leading to heated clashes with Argentina’s current left-leaning president.” Will the same issues come up if I were to bring up the topic in Sicily? I will have to report back on this once I return in a week, until then, arrivederci!
